Warning on Street Food Safety Abroad
Health experts are cautioning travelers to exercise vigilance when consuming fried street food in foreign countries. The warning, issued under the HQtest Food Safety Initiative, highlights growing concerns over the use of reused or contaminated vegetable oils by some street vendors.
When cooking oils are used repeatedly or improperly stored, they can degrade into harmful compounds, including trans fats and carcinogens. These substances may not only alter the taste and smell of food but also pose serious health risks, such as digestive issues, inflammation, or even long-term chronic diseases.
Budget-friendly fried street foods, while tempting and convenient, are often prepared under minimal regulation in many regions, making it difficult to ensure proper hygiene or oil freshness. Travelers are advised to be cautious and opt for freshly prepared meals from reputable vendors whenever possible.
This advisory aims to promote healthier and safer eating habits during international travel—especially in areas where food safety standards vary widely.
