Security experts caution that these thefts are difficult to detect in real time, since cabin crew are focused on passenger safety and service, not constant surveillance of baggage compartments. By the time a flight lands, many travelers only discover the loss after disembarking, making it nearly impossible to identify the culprit.

To reduce the risk, travelers are strongly advised to keep money, jewelry, passports, and other valuables on their person—preferably in a secure pocket or money belt—rather than storing them in bags placed in overhead bins or under seats. Airlines and airport authorities also recommend reporting any suspicious behavior immediately to the cabin crew so that timely action can be taken.
