U.S. Travel Alert: Summer 2025 COVID-19 Surge Abroad

As Americans prepare for summer getaways overseas, health authorities warn of a sustained uptick in COVID-19 cases across many popular destinations. Over the past six weeks, weekly new infections have quadrupled, driven largely by outbreaks among older adults. Travelers—especially those aged 60 and above—should take extra precautions before departure and throughout their trip.

Rising Case Counts Overseas
  • In late June 2025, weekly new COVID-19 cases averaged just 63 per week in monitored regions.

  • By early July, that number surged to 272 confirmed infections—more than a four-fold increase in six weeks.

  • Approximately 60 percent of these new cases involve individuals aged 65 and older.

What’s Driving the Uptick?
  1. Waning Booster Uptake • Many older adults have delayed or skipped their fourth vaccine dose, reducing community immunity.

  2. Indoor Crowding in Summer Heat • Tourists and locals seek air-conditioned venues, often relaxing mask use and ventilation.

  3. Relaxed Isolation Rules • Most countries no longer require mandatory isolation for mild or asymptomatic infections, encouraging undetected spread.

Why Older Travelers Are at Greater Risk
  • Immune response naturally declines with age, raising the chance of severe illness or hospitalization.

  • Antiviral therapies like Paxlovid are now restricted to high-risk groups (over 60, immunocompromised, chronic conditions).

  • Many workplaces abroad have no provisions for paid sick leave, so infected travelers may struggle to recover without depleting personal vacation time.

Key Precautions for U.S. Citizens
  1. Update Your Vaccines

    1. Schedule a fourth (booster) dose at least two weeks before travel, especially if you’re over 60.

  2. Pack Protective Gear

    1. Bring high-quality masks (N95, KN95 or equivalent) and hand sanitizer.

    2. Use them in crowded indoor settings—airports, public transit, restaurants.

  3. Monitor Your Health

    1. Carry rapid antigen tests for on-the-spot screening if you feel feverish or fatigued.

    2. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive local health alerts.

  4. Secure Travel Insurance

    1. Confirm coverage includes COVID-related medical care and medical evacuation.

    2. Verify cancellation policies in case you test positive pre- or mid-journey.

  5. Know Local Entry Rules

    1. Some countries still require proof of vaccination or a negative test for entry.

    2. Check the U.S. State Department’s country pages and foreign health ministry websites for the latest updates.

Preparing for the Unexpected

Even if you feel healthy, pack a small “recovery kit” with fever reducers, electrolytes, and basic first-aid supplies. Identify nearby clinics before you land, and understand that treatment options may be limited for lower-risk travelers. Above all, staying informed and following layered prevention measures will help ensure your summer trip remains safe and enjoyable.

Safe travels—and stay vigilant.
